The company says the move has been made to cater to rapidly growing demand in the area.
The new high-capacity site – located just off the M56 in Wythenshawe – is situated between Manchester city centre and Manchester Airport. Aggregates Industries says both areas are currently undergoing a high volume of significant improvement works that require an extensive amount of concrete, including the construction of hotels, hospitals and university accommodation.
Paul Halpin, territory sales manager at Aggregate Industries, said: “With our established ready mix concrete plant in Salford running at capacity, we had to turn down projects in this rapidly developing region due to lack of resources. The addition of the new plant means we are now well positioned to meet the demands of Greater Manchester and become the supplier of choice."
The new Manchester plant is able to provide concrete up to a rate of 200m3 per hour from its two new twin-shaft mixer units. Its location means it is close to its cement and aggregates supply at Cauldon and Buxton, while GGBS cement filler comes in from the port at Runcorn, which Aggregates Industries says lowers road miles and therefore emissions associated with material transportation.
Halpin said the plant is designed with efficiency in mind – with its receiving hopper minimising truck and shovel movements around site – and is able to provide the full range of Aggregate Industries’ concrete and screed portfolio. He added that its two loading heads make it capable of a speedy turnaround which is key for customers who wish to collect concrete.
Aggregate Industries provides a range of ready mix concretes including Agilia self-compacting concrete; Watertight, a range of specialised concretes designed to protect a structure from water ingress or to retain water within a structure; and Strike rapid strength development concrete. The plant can also provide Cemfloor screed and Minimix small load delivery service.
