VIDEO: London’s Silvertown Tunnel gets approval

October 13, 2016
A road tunnel costing €1 billion and a €111 million cycle and pedestrian bridge are among three infrastructure projects given the go-ahead by London’s mayor.

The Silvertown Tunnel and the cycle and pedestrian bridge will link the Canary Wharf area north of the River Thames with Rotherhithe on the south bank.

London mayor Sadiq Khan also approved an extension to the Docklands Light Railway that would run to Gallions Reach on the south bank of the Thames.

Two other crossing are under consultation, according to a local media reports. A ferry route would run between the Isle of Dogs and North Greenwich and a London Overground railway from Abbey Wood to Barking Riverside.

Business groups welcomed the news but there has been continuing opposition from environmental groups and local campaigners who claim that the routes would worsen air quality.

The twin-bore Silvertown Tunnel will be constructed just east of the Blackwall Tunnel that suffers from growing congestion. Silvertown is expected to be a toll road with discounts for local residents and be open by 2023. Construction of the design, build, finance and maintenance project could start in 2018-19. Construction could take just over four years followed by a 25-year concession.

Prequalification documents should be submitted to the <%$Linker:2External<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><dictionary />000oLinkExternalprocurement department of Transport for London (TfLA web link to submit the documents falsehttps://tflsilvertown.bravosolution.co.uk/web/login.shtmlfalsefalse%>) before the end of November.
