Uruguay has plans to upgrade its road network. A budget of US$545 million has been set by the Uruguayan Government for road development works across the country during 2021. This is a considerable increase from the $218 million spent on roads in Uruguay in 2020.
One of the most important routes to benefit from improvements during 2021 will be Route 5. The section from Canelones to Paso de los Toros is to be widened, which will help transport to and from the port of Montevideo and an agreement for the work has already been reached with its operator, Hernandez y Gonzalez.
In the coming five-year period, $1.92 billion will be budgeted for road improvements in Uruguay meanwhile. Some $532 will be spent on roads in the country in 2022, $329 million in 2023 and $260 million in 2024. However, further funding for road works may be available through PPP schemes.
