Tunisia is planning a major programme of highway expansion as well as repairs to local roads. One of the most important projects is for the completion of the highway linking Tunisia with neighbouring Algeria.

At the end of 2023 Tunisia’s highway network extended 745km and the country plans to increase this to 1,323km by 2035. The mode used for financing the highway expansion scheme has yet to be determined however, with PPPs having been ruled out by the Tunisian Government. Instead, public procurement contracts are being considered, with international financing being sought.

Meanwhile, a loan worth US$220 million from the World Bank will help pay for infrastructure works between Kasserine, Sidi Bouzid and Sfax. Road upgrades will be carried out to 65km of roads while 117km of connecting rods will be improved and maintained.
