Italian rental sector lifted by the ‘Expo effect’
The machinery and equipment hire sector in Italy saw a slight upturn in business for 2015 over that for 2014, a rise of 0.7%.
The hire sector is worth more than €1.3 billion, with the main products being scaffolding and cranes – about €360 million. Platform rentals were around €280 million and earth moving machinery totalled €260 million. Prefabricated modules brought in €100 million, while power generator sets were around €110 million.
The incremental improvement was likely due to an “Expo effect”, according to Marco Prosperi, director of Assodimi-Assonolo, the association of industrial machinery distributors in Italy.
“Compared to the 80% collapse in sales during the worst years of the crisis,” said Prosperi.
“The rental field suffered much less, with downturns in the 10-15% range. Last year, 2015, saw a resumption, driven in particular by companies in northern Italy which benefitted from works related to Expo Milan. But there are also positive signs from central and southern Italy.”
Italy has more than 1,500 companies in the machinery and equipment hire sector, with the top 50 capable of generating 40% of total turnover. This is a recent market in Italy, emerging only about 20 years ago. But in countries such as the United Kingdom it has been active for over 60 years.
Margins for growth in Italy are still large. Rented equipment and machinery in Italy only represents 1% of total use construction sites, compared to 1.8% in France and 2% in the UK.
Assodimi will be represented at the Transpotec Logitec and323 Samoter - International Earth Moving and Building Machinery Exhibition –in Verona in next year, 2017: February 22-25, in the Verona Exhibition Centre.
Samoter, a triennial event, is owned by Veronafiere and a major event for the construction sector. The last edition was held in conjunction with Asphaltica, an event organised in collaboration with Siteb, the Italian Bitumen, Asphalt & Roads Association.
Transpotec Logitec, a biennial event, owned by Fiera Milano, is dedicated to road transport and logistics.
The two events will retain their respective identities and specific trade character but will share exhibition space and entrance gate, as well as coordinate promotional and sales initiatives.
