The northern German city of Hamburg is planning to expand the A1 motorway to eight lanes in the southeast.
Widening should take place on the 8km-long stretch between Harburg and the Hamburg-Südost triangle, according to a report in the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Two bridges over the Norderelbe and Süderelbe rivers are likely to be replaced and the Hamburg-Süd intersection would be rebuilt.
Planning approval, however, is likely to begin in two years and work would start by the end of 2024.
