The US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is funding US$729.4 million of emergency repairs across 34 US states, the District of Colombia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Isles. The package will address roads and bridges damaged by extreme weather conditions caused by climate change.
The funding package is part of a programme from the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) to rebuild and repair bridges and roads that have been affected by floods, storms and landslips. The funding is being delivered through the FHWA’s Emergency Relief (ER) programme.
In addition, USDOT is providing $74.6 million to Hawaii to improve the Hakalau and Nanue bridges. And $24.4 million from USDOT will be used for maintenance and repairs to road links on Kauai and Maui.
