Construction for a key congestion cutting contract in Colorado is coming shortly. The US$350 million project will see widening work being carried out to a 27km stretch of Interstate 25 lying to the south of Denver and between Monument and Castle Rock. The project is intended to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on this stretch of I-25, which suffers from severe delays to drivers at present during peak travel periods. At present this stretch of I-25 features just four lanes and is not able to cope with traffic demand. But the work will add an extra tolled lane in both directions and provide the additional capacity required. Construction work will commence in 2018 as the project is now being brought forward and the work should take until the second quarter of 2021 to complete. However this timeline requires a $65 million federal grant for the project to continue on schedule.
A similar express lane construction project has already been carried out to widen US 36 in Colorado on the section between Denver and Boulder.
