A new line of compact asphalt rollers from 172 Bomag is said to offer increased performance and productivity. The compay's new sub 1.8tonne twin drum compaction machines have been designed with high levels of customer feedback to ensure market acceptance. There are six new models in the 1.5-1.7tonne class, with power from low emission 1265 Kubota engines. This is the fifth generation for these variants, with successive upgrades having made major gains in performance and reductions in running costs. The prototype was first seen at the 688 Bauma 2010 event in Munich, however the models are now in production and aimed squarely at the rental market.
Dr Iris von Kirschbaum is head of communications at BOMAG and she said that following the unveiling of the prototype model at the bauma 2010 exhibition, the firm brought in customers to test the prototype, analyse its performance and carry out a benchmarking process. She said, "The frame we changed, and improved the side view as well as making a bigger space for seating." Alan Batty, managing director of BOMAG GB said that the machines come with a useful intelligent vibration control (IVC), which can be set to ensure compaction starts when the machine travels at more than 1km/h and stops when the speed exceeds 5km/h. This also prevents vibration when the compactor is stationary and the system can be turned off when the machne is being moved from one work area to another.
The impact resistant composite engine cover and frame design are said to maximise visibility to the front and bottom rim of the drum. The new control layout features a Smart Drive steering wheel and multi-function control lever.. Fuel economy is said to be good, with an ECO mode further reducing consumption while the machines have many proven components, such as the exciter system and articulation joint, to ensure reliability.
The standard models are the BW80AD-5, BW90 AD-5 and BW100 ADM-5, while there is also the BW100ACM-5 combination roller with a 1m wide drum, and two clear-sided rollers with drum widths of either 0.9m or 1m. These last two units are the BW90 SC-5 and BW100 SC-5 and have drums offset by 60mm, allowing working widths of 0.96m and 1.06m. The drums are suspended or connected to the frame on one side only, which allows an operator to compact on both the left and right sides close to a wall or kerb. The sprinkler system comes with a sophisticated membrane pump, a water-saving concept with triple filtering, wind-protected nozzles and automatic sprinkler control. This set up is said to ensure that the drums receive sufficient water even in strong winds or when the roller is on an incline.
Other features include a storage compartment under the seat for tools, individual vibration switches as standard, large lashing rings and a single lifting point.
