Cambodia has set itself an ambitious target of cutting crash casualties and improving road safety. By 2030 the target is to reduce road deaths by 50% from current levels. The safety target has been set by the Cambodian Government.

The country’s road death rate has a heavy impact on GDP that it can ill afford as well as having a massive human cost. According to data from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, road crashes cost Cambodia US$379.2 million in 2022.

The country has had some success in lowering its road death toll already, falling from 10.9 deaths/100,000 of population in 2020 to 10.1 deaths/100,000 of population in 2022. To put the country's road safety in context, it is already better than that of the US however.
