It is now 25 years since the UK's M25 motorway opened to traffic. One of Europe's busiest highways, the road is an orbital route around UK capital London. The M25 has pioneered various traffic technologies, being one of the first to use microprocessor technology to help keep traffic flowing, originally with a traffic control centre at Chigwell but now with two advanced centres. The M25 was also one of the first major highways to trial variable speed limits as a means of controlling traffic flow rates at high volume, peak periods.
