US$1.9 billion to replace collapsed Francis Scott Bridge

It will cost US$1.7 billion to $1.9 billion to replace Baltimore’s collapsed Francis Scott Bridge according to the latest estimates. The Maryland Department of Transportation (DOT) says that the work will take around 36 months to be carried out.

An insurance payout of $350 million is due from the insurance company to Maryland shortly. However, substantially more funding will be required to pay for a new bridge and this still has to be secured.

A new design for the bridge has already been put forward, which has been drafted in collaboration with architect Carlo Ratti, professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the famous French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux. Webuild, through its US subsidiary Lane, has proposed a replacement cable-stayed bridge.

Italian firm Webuild has been involved in some of the most important bridge projects in recent years, including the replacement highway bridge in Genoa, Italy.

Numerous transportation upgrades are planned for Maryland at present.
