The new Swina Tunnel in Northern Poland connecting Usedom Island and Wolin Island is opening to traffic. The completion of the project was delayed by a number of factors including the pandemic.

The 3.2km tunnel has cost €196.6 million to construct. A 13.5m diameter TBM weighing over 2,700tonnes was used to drive the tunnel, which was then lined and fitted out with the necessary equipment. Construction commenced in March 2021. There were legal complexities for the project due to disputes over the awarding of the contract, which were later resolved.

At its deepest point the tunnel is 38m below sea level and the new link carries vehicle traffic. However, the ferry service is being continued and carries pedestrians and cyclists.

The EU provided €162.3 million for the project in 2018.
