New road links are planned for Russia’s first and second cities, Moscow and St Petersburg. The plans are intended to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in these Russian cities.

Moscow in particular is notorious for its chronic traffic congestion, with the Russian city regularly figuring in surveys as one of the 10 worst cities in the world for traffic delays. One of the strategies to alleviate the problem in Moscow is the development of the New Moscow area, expanding the city while also regenerating existing areas in the city. The plans call for improved transport systems, with around 200km of new roads due to be built by the end of 2024.

Meanwhile, St Petersburg stands to benefit from the construction of the second ring road, which is intended for completion by 2024. The ring road will be tolled.
