The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in the US has given its approval to plans to build a new bridge across the Chesapeake Bay. The planned bridge crossing would be located close to the two existing bridge spans.
However, some locals have voiced their opposition to the plans, saying that the area around the bridge can be very congested at peak periods. The new project will include the construction of up to 35km of roads.
Building the new bridge plus the connecting roads is expected to cost anything from US$5.4 billion to $8.9 billion.
