The opening of a 3km highway link is helping cut journey times for drivers in Tampa Bay, Florida. The new stretch of road is an extension of the Selmon Expressway, linking the route with Gandy Bridge. The project cost US$230 million, with the construction work commencing in 2018.
The raised road link is 9m above ground level, a design that was used to retain the sight lines of businesses along Gandy Boulevard. Drivers now have the choice of the Gandy Express route for local destinations, or the new link for longer distance journeys.
Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) says that the opening of the link will mean drivers in the Tampa Bay area will have shorter journey times between Hillsborough County and Pinellas County.
