The tender has now been published by the 2602 Israel National Roads Company for the upgrade to Road No 85, a project expected to cost US$134.2 million (500 million NIS). The work includes widening and building an interchange on Roads No 85, which along with improvements to Road No 65 forms a key component of the Netivei Israel plan. This programme of works is aimed at connecting the Galilee Panhandle to the Cross Israel Highway and central Israel. The new interchange on Road No 85 will be built between Kadarim junction and Amiad junction.
This project will be carried out in addition to work on several other segments on roads forming the eastern end of the Netivei Israel plan to provide 57km of highway without a single traffic light. The road is classified as a scenic route, which includes observation points for visitors and tourists. As part of the road's upgrading, attention will be focused on environmental, landscape and ecological aspects and additional paths will be added. The existing entry junctions into local settlements will be cancelled, and instead grade separators will be installed. Construction work is being carried out in co-ordination with the Nature and Parks Authority, and the river beds of several streams, that to date were blocked by embankments, will be opened. Instead of these embankments, bridges will be built and they will enable crossing of these streams by visitors and animals. The project includes relocation and cutting down of trees that will be conducted in coordination with the Israel forestation authority (4140 Jewish National Fund - KKL). Additionally, the project includes construction of a crossing for animals over Road No 85. In order to shorten project execution timelines, the tender was published based on the Price and Time (A+B) method. The winning contractor will be the bidder offering the lowest price combined with the shortest execution time.
