India’s longest greenfield expressway project is due for completion in the third quarter of 2022. The 701km expressway will connect Mumbai and Nagpur and is expected to halve journey times between the two cities when it opens on August 15th.
The work is being carried out under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model. The route will have a speed limit of 120km/h for cars and 80km/h for heavy vehicles, while it features 24 interchanges and 26 toll booths. Construction of the route is being managed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
The expressway is being built with three lanes in either direction but is being designed with provision to add a further lane in either direction. The road passes through 10 districts and is expected to boost economic activity in all the surrounding areas along the route.
