Guatemala’s Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing is seeking international loans of US$920 million to transform three national road sections into fast motorways.
The loans could be obtained at some stage in 2014. One negotiated with the863 Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), of $280 million for the widening of CA-2 Oriente motorway to a four-lane motorway, is reportedly at its final stage. The bank has given its approval already and it is only the Monetary Council that has to do the same so it can be submitted to Congress early in 2014. A second loan of $300 million being negotiated with CABEI concerns works between El Rancho and Mayuelas. A third loan of $340 million is sought from BNDES for the widening of the same motorway between Mayuelas and Santo Tomas de Castilla port.
In November 2013,3260 World Highways reported how Guatemala had agreed a loan with CABEI of US$400 million to develop rural roads. This loan is on top of loans of $200 million taken from the 2332 World Bank and of $237 million taken from the IADB for the same purpose.
The Guatemalan government says that with $150 million alone it can build nearly 500kms of rural roads. The authorities will also be looking to use the CABEI rural roads loan to replace some existing road bridges. Between 60 and 70 temporary bridges are earmarked to be replaced with permanent bridges.
