Work will start on a major road widening project in Colorado in the second quarter of 2023. The upgrade work to I-70 is expected to cost US$700 million.
The work will take around 48 months to complete. The project involves widening I-70 between Denver and Idaho Springs so that it features a minimum of three lanes in either direction.
The work is needed to relieve congestion in the area at peak periods and should help reduce journey times for drivers. The area has seen an increase in population in recent years along with growth in traffic volumes, leading to frequent delays during peak travel times.
The project will be managed by the Colorado Department of Transportation.
A series of works are being carried out in Colorado on the I-70 route, with a new interchange being built between the highway and Denver International Airport. This work is also aimed at boosting capacity and improving traffic flow due to delays in the vicinity of the airport during peak travel periods. This work has included construction of a new bridge and express lanes as well as lanes for high occupancy vehicles.
