Weighing only 43grams and measuring just 36x39x20mms, the MDL micro laser module (MLM) is said to give mobiles eye-safe laser measurement capability.
Powered by a standard USB connector the tiny MLM, believed by MDL to be the smallest in the world, is said to require less than 70mA to make hundreds of measurements a second of objects within a 120m radius. The technology is now being marketed to original equipment manufacturers, some of which MDL hope will develop the software and interface so MLM can be applied to different products.
MDL founder and chairman, Steve Ball, said integrating MLM into mobile phones is just one of many potential applications for the technology.
“The mobile phone industry has to continue adding new features to sell new models to people who already possess a mobile phone,” said Ball.
“Incorporating a micro laser such as ours could add an important new facility which would mean that people working in many industries, such as civil engineering, construction and surveying, would no longer need some types of hand-held laser technology as they would be able to use their mobile phone,” added the MDL chairman.
