Official data from the Association des sociétés françaises d'autoroutes (AFSA) in France shows a slight improvement in road safety for the country’s highway network. There were 163 fatal crashes resulting in 181 road deaths on the highway network in 2023. This is a slight drop from the 167 fatal crashes and 188 road deaths seen in 2022.

Driving under the influence of drink or drugs was a major factor in 31% of fatal crashes. Excessive speed was a major factor in 19% of fatal crashes. Dangerous driving accounted for 17% of fatal crashes, with driver distraction and driver tiredness accounting for 15% and 13% respectively.
