This year’s 50th anniversary of the first edition of Samoter in Verona, Italy, could mark the start of a construction equipment sales’ renaissance for a nation with a rich construction equipment manufacturing heritage. Guy Woodford reports
It’s been a tough few years for the Italian construction equipment manufacturing industry. A difficult domestic and wider European sales market coupled with a challenging European economic climate has created something of a perfect storm. But many Italian and other European-headquartered firms have tipped 2014 as a year for improved market conditions, with major construction equipment exhibitions such as the 29th edition of323 Samoter being held for the first time alongside 160 Asphaltica at Veronafiere in Verona from 8-11 May 2014 seen as key to more encouraging sales performance.
The exhibitor line-ups for what are Italy’s leading construction equipment exhibitions makes for impressive reading, with globally renowned names such as2300 Komatsu, 6791 Ammann and 161 Atlas Copco, and leading Italian manufacturers such as 1141 SIMEX, Controls, Massenza and 1175 Zoomlion-owned CIFA showcasing their latest products.
Komatsu managing director Italy Enrico Prandini said the Japanese construction equipment manufacturing giant would be showcasing “important previews” of its global product innovations during this year’s Samoter event. He also outlined three key reasons for the firm’s presence. “First of all, because we build machinery in our own production plant in Italy and it is crucial for us to give a signal to the market and the country. Secondly, because Samoter is the main Italian event for the earthmoving and building machinery sector and part of the trio of European exhibitions referring to3399 CECE, taking part is strategic for our distribution network. Thirdly, this year is the 50th anniversary of the first edition [of Samoter] and we want to stress that the relationship with Veronafiere and Samoter is a milestone in our history.”
Such support shown to Samoter and Asphaltica, and belief in its commercial benefits, has been echoed by show organisers and hosts, Veronafiere. Giovanni Mantovani, CEO of Veronafiere, said, “We believe in the industry, on the strength of 50 years of [Samoter] history, and the producer associations are backing us up. North Africa, the Mediterranean area, Eastern and Northern Europe are areas alongside Italy where we are investing to stimulate incoming attendance. Yet significant attention is also being paid to product innovation and conferences."
2539 Unacea, a major trade association representing Italian construction equipment companies, will have a lounge at Samoter acting as a meeting point for all members and visitors. It will host debates and round table discussions on the issues affecting the construction machinery industry and market. A further Unacea exhibition area will be entirely dedicated to member companies including Canginibenne, Cga, CIFA, Euromecc, Fiori, G.F. Gordini, 7267 Lameter, 1140 Mantovanibenne, Messersì, Palazzani, Samep Tools, Sci Editrice, SIMEX, Turbosol and Uemme.
Enrico Santini, president of Unacea, said, "Teamwork has always been a hallmark of our association and once again we have decided to join forces and organise a full association area at Samoter with the aim of promoting the image of our industrial sector. Despite the market crisis in recent years, we have decided to provide a signal of optimism in the hope that the growth measures announced by the [Italian] Government will be introduced as soon as possible."
